Race Report: A Girl and Her R1

People often wonder why racers risk life and limb to put the rubber on the road and ride as fast as they can in the pursuit of…what? Money? Fame? Only a minute fraction of the country’s motorcycle racers will ever make enough money to be rich. The lucky ones are able to secure enough sponsorship to help subsidize the costs of their extravagant, dangerous hobby. The rest of us, well, we must just be plain crazy to be throwing money away on tires, motors, suspension, leathers, helmets, fuel, entry fees, hotel rooms, hospital bills, the list goes on.

Girl Drags Elbow & Lives

So I’m a pretty okay racer, for a girl I guess, but what’s kind of silly is that when I first started doing track days, it never really occurred to me that I might someday be out there racing; all I wanted was a photo of me dragging my knee around the track. First I had to actually drag knee, which was a process in and of itself, but then for Joe over at 4theriders.com to actually get photographic evidence of it was also a tall order. Finally I got my photo and I was happy, but by then it was too late – I had already picked up a race bike, had a New Racer School day booked with Zoom Zoom Track Days, and was hurtling brazenly along the path of becoming a real motorcycle racer.

Now I have a new mission in life: to drag elbow. But one girl beat me to it:

AMA Red Bull U.S. Rookies Cup Cancelled

Red Bull Rookies Cup Racers

Big frowny face here. Everyone was so excited to watch 15 year-old Elena Myers participate in this year’s AMA Red Bull Rookies Cup, a unique race series for nurturing young American racing talent, but according to a press release issued by Red Bull, the down economy has resulted in Red Bull canceling the U.S. Rookies Cup and shortening the European MotoGP Rookies Cup by two races.

Nina Prinz Rocks Europe on her Factory R1

It’s old news, but new to me and maybe new to you American roadracing girls out there, but Nina Prinz has been rocking roadracing’s European Women’s Championship, officially sanctioned by FIM (Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme), for the past three years, this past year on a factory supported R1.
