Pretty Pics of Racing Chicks – AFM R2

Joe Salas, creative genius behind 4theriders, was one of my earliest motorcycling mentors. I happened to be on a “Snellbux” ride with him almost three years ago and I remember him demonstrating to me how to hang off the bike, looking a bit like a big gorilla in tattered leathers (this should have been a red flag) clinging to a small tree. Although Joe was beset by a few unfortunate crashes, his words and advice were really helpful and got me off to a good start.

He’s also a great photographer and a big supporter of the lady racers. He contacted me proactively this week asking me if I would like photos of the girls for my blog, and of course I said “hell yes!” Thanks a million Joe, your support means a lot to us.

For the first AFemme race, we were gridded by bike number, which meant I was dead freaking last on the three row grid. Fortunately I got one of my best starts on record and can be seen here rocketing past Jennifer Laurtizen. I’m pretty amazed because I feel like I can even see the front end of my bike raised up from the weight transfer. Why don’t I get starts like this in my normal races? Maybe because I knew it would take everything I had to out-start Zoe Rem, who was a row ahead of me and takes off faster than a rocket ship and has no fear dicing through starting lap traffic.

I even found myself side by side with Angie Loy. I can’t remember if she was on the second row or in the first. But I was like, “holy crap, that’s Angie next to me.” We were both following Joy Higa up the hill into turn 2.

I think Deb Barton is coming up “round the outside, round the outside, round the outside” (a bit of Eminem stuck in my head this morning) on her Honda RS125, because she gets by me before turn four I believe and eventually settles into second behind Angie “Pony” Loy.

A pretty epic photo, one to treasure. This is Shelina Moreda, in her second or third race ever, taking the holeshot in Clubman Middleweight, a race only for the newest racers. Those are all men behind her. Just FYI. It’s pretty much her life off the track too, hee hee.

Future AFemme racer Josie Gomez

Josie Gomez is going places, this much is true. I think she’s only 21 or 22 and finishing up school so she can start making money to come racing. She’s already fast on the street and does the occasional track day. Come racing Josie!

See what us AFM girls have to put up with? Grids so freaking big that when I started on the back row of my first 650 Twins race last year, I was gridded 74th of 74 and could barely see the green flag. As you can see I am starting to put more and more boys behind me. Good thing, because the starts are extra scary when you’ve got dozens of excitable noobs gridded ahead of you.

AFM Round 2 Results – The Chick Report

Here are the unoffocial results from the weekend. Congratulations again to all the girls, especially Debra Barton for winning Formula III, Ironbutt Joy Higa for finishing five races, and Cassandra Gaddy for getting back on the horse and doing really well at it too. Way to go!

Also, it is a serious chore to get all these results from the AFM site and put them in here, so if I’ve made any mistakes, please let me know! You can email me at christie@passedbyachick.com. Please also send me race reports and observations from the weekend. Thanks!

Good Times, Bad Times

So Saturday was an awesome day. We had 11 female racers signed up for Formula AFemme, the AFM’s first all female exhibition race, and nine ended up competing. Angie Loy, STAR School instructor and WERA West fast girl, took first place followed by Deb Barton on her fast little 125 GP bike, and then Joy Higa on her Yamaha R6.

At the end of the day we lined up all our bikes (except for mine, which was already packed away) for a photo shoot in the winner’s circle. It was a wonderful moment. Surrounded by my fellow racer girls, feeling the girl power, all these awesome, rock star individuals, many of whom I’ve long looked up to and many more I’m getting to know and love competing with.

Shelina Moreda had just gotten the holeshot in Clubman Middleweight, the race right before AFemme, only to be collided into entering the bus stop, leaving her with severed brake lines and nowhere to go. Miraculously she kept it upright and as I was getting ready for the chicks’ race I saw her heading back to her pits, fire in her eyes, yelling “FUCK! FUCK! FUCK!” I can’t even imagine what it must be like to get hit, let alone no longer having front brakes.

Jennifer Lauritzen had a bike breakdown in practice earlier, but with a little help from her friends and the awesome Twin Works Factory crew, she was able to borrow a “second gen” (2003 and newer, fuel injected) Suzuki SV650 for her race. Already used to the first gen version, she had fun trying out Ricky’s bells and whistles and ended up having a great time in the race.

I, naturally, raced like a total Red Bull-fueled doofus the first half a lap only to watch one of my heroes, long time racer and mechanic Deb Barton, go swooshing by, smooth as silk. Great! Now Deb knows the truth!

After the highs of Saturday, Sunday started off with a pretty devastating series of crashes in Open Superbike. I watched from about ten rows up in the grandstands, rocking out to KC & the Sunshine Band and filled with excitement about watching my man race his big boy bike, when three riders went down at the launch, two of them appearing to get run over by other bikes. The silence that filled the air as the screaming bikes trailed off into the distance was deafening, save for the sounds of a bike sliding on the ground and two very injured men yelling. I guess it is good that they were at least yelling. One was helicoptered out with serious injuries and I believe is still in ICU.

It was awful. I wish I could delete all of it from my brain. The rest of the day was dreary and another helicopter came and went. My heart goes out to the racers who were hurt, and to their families as well.

I had a tough enough time writing even this, even though I was so thrilled by my girls out there in AFemme. More details on the race, photos, and how everyone did on Sunday will hopefully follow.
